They can soak up heavy metals, metabolising them into safer chemicals - something humans have had no way of disposing of until now. These undesirable heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, among others) are produced during the mining process of precious metals and gemstones, and can cause land slides, acid rain, and water pollution.
