CAD Beginner Lesson

£95.00

This CAD beginner lesson is taught 1-1 online or in person depending upon the clients needs and accessibility. The session is 2 hours in total, and will introduce the basics of the Rhino program, leaving you able to navigate and use Rhino with confidence. It is created as a way to allow students to see if CAD is for them, and to open up the imagination to 3D modelling.

With further lessons, booked in after your first session with your tutor, you will focus on how to use Rhino to create sellable pieces of jewellery. These lessons will take you through the basics of jewellery CAD modelling using Rhino 3D, covering essential information needed to provide jewellers with the confidence to experiment with the program on their own and solve design problems.

To get the most out of this first session, and future sessions, basic knowledge of jewellery or jewellery making is recommended.

Your lessons will cover:

  1. Learning the Rhino user interface

  2. Creating and controlling curves

  3. Essential 3D solid modelling commands for building your own shapes

  4. Problem solving strategy in CAD

  5. Tolerances for effective manufacturing of stone settings and most types of jewellery

  6. Building a jewellery to your desired size and specifications

  7. Exporting STL files for 3D printing

  8. Explanation and information about 3D printing

You will need:

A CAD compatible laptop with Rhino 8 software downloaded, with a separate mouse.

About the Tutor

Lorna McNaught FGA DGA is a contemporary jeweller trained in Birmingham and based in Bristol. She owns a jewellery business, Lorna Grace Jewellery, for which she designs, produces, and hand-finishes pieces made from sustainable materials. She specialises in CAD technologies such as Rhino, Matrix, and Zbrush. Her hand-making technical skills include gold and silversmith work, wax/resin carving and stonesetting. Lorna has worked as a CAD designer for 5 years for both her own company and various high street brands. Her experience as a workshop manager has allowed her understand the manufacturing process from start to finish through working alongside gold and silversmiths, mounters, and stone-setters.Lorna is an accredited gemmologist and diamond grader, and can offer insight into how to create CAD designs which properly accommodate gemstones.Lorna has won awards in design, craftsmanship, and sustainability, exhibiting work at The Goldsmith Centre and New Designers in London, as well as at Fashion Week in Milan.
